First, do no harm: user studies in pervasive healthcare research
نویسنده
چکیده
Pervasive Computing can help address some of the critical healthcare issues facing modern society, such as an aging population, increased obesity and escalating costs. While interaction concerns are of primary importance in pervasive computing, patient safety and the complexity of the domain demand special attention to these issues when designing and evaluating healthcare applications. Several pervasive healthcare solutions advanced at CICESE’s Laboratory for Mobile and Ubiquitous Healthcare will be presented, for a variety of application scenarios such as supporting hospital work, caring for elders with cognitive disabilities or motivating patients with a chronic disease to adopt a healthier lifestyle. The approaches used to understand user needs and concerns of other stakeholders will be discussed, as well as the techniques used to evaluate these novel technologies. Issues that affect user acceptance of pervasive healthcare solutions, such as privacy and uncertainty, will also be discussed. Jesus Favela is a professor of computer science at CICESE, Mexico, where he leads the Mobile and Ubiquitous Healthcare Laboratory. His research interests include Ubiquitous Computing, Human-Computer Interaction and Medical Informatics. Much of his research efforts have focused on the design and evaluation of ambient computing environments for healthcare. In collaboration with public and private Mexican hospitals his research team has conducted fieldwork studies to gain a better understanding of current work practices and envision scenarios for the use of pervasive computing technology in such complex environments. Usability evaluations and adoption studies have also been conducted to assess their acceptance. Dr. Favela holds a BSc from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM) and MSc and PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is a member of the ACM and the Mexican Computer Science Society, of which he was president in the period 2003-2005.

The Role of Employee Whistleblowing and Raising Concerns in an Organizational Learning Culture – Elusive and Laudable?; Comment on “Cultures of Silence and Cultures of Voice: The Role of Whistleblowing in Healthcare Organisations”
It is inevitable that healthcare workers throughout their careers will witness actual or potential threats to patient safety in the course of their work. Some of these threats will result in serious harm occurring to others, whilst at other times such threats will result in minimal harm, or a ‘near miss’ where harm is avoided at the last minute. Despite organizations encouraging employees to ‘s...
متن کاملPervasive healthcare as a scientific discipline.
OBJECTIVE The OECD countries are facing a set of core challenges; an increasing elderly population; increasing number of chronic and lifestyle-related diseases; expanding scope of what medicine can do; and increasing lack of medical professionals. Pervasive healthcare asks how pervasive computing technology can be designed to meet these challenges. The objective of this paper is to discuss 'per...
متن کامل“First, Do No Harm”: Have the Health Impacts of Government Bills on Tax Legislation Been Assessed in Finland?
As taxation is one of the key public policy domains influencing population health, and as there is a legal, strategic, and programmatic basis for health impact assessment (HIA) in Finland, we analyzed all 235 government bills on tax legislation over the years 2007–2014 to see whether the health impacts of the tax bills had been assessed. We found that health impacts had been assessed for 13 bil...

In response to a weight of evidence that patients are frequently harmed as a result of their care, there have been concerted efforts to make healthcare safer, with health systems across the globe investing significant resources in policies and programmes designed to reduce adverse events. Yet, despite extensive efforts, improvements in safety have proved difficult to sustain and spread, with st...

The discussion between general practitioners (GPs) and healthcare delivery organizations necessitates a common language. The presentation of the 4 types of GP’s activities, opens dialogue but can lead to possible misunderstandings between the micro- and macro-level of the healthcare system. This commentary takes 4 examples: costs reduction by P4, priority of beneficence or nonmaleficence, role ...
